Iron (III)ox ide chloride is capable of intercalating am m onia and am ines into its layer la ttic e . Long chain m olecules form bilayers w ith ex tended chains alm ost perpendicular to the host lattice layers at room tem p era tu re (in tercalate com position): FeO C l • (0.54 ± 0.03)«-CxH 2jr+1NH2 with x > 12) and tilted by 57° at abou t 100—110 °C (in tercalate com position: FeO C l(0.45 ± 0 .0 2 )n -C xH 2x+iN H 2 with x > 1 2 ) . The tem p era tu re-d ep en d en t changes in basal spacings betw een 20 and 110 °C are complex. A bove 120 °C the layers o f the host lattice are altered irreversibly by substitu tion and H C l-release to F eO C l,_>1( —N H C tH 2v+i)v with y < ca
